Fungal Biotechnology, Genetic Manipulation of Fungi, Cell Factories

Professor David Archer heads a major research group at the University of Nottingham that investigates the biology of fungi relevant to (a) their exploitation in the biotechnology industries, and (b) their contamination of foods and beverages that leads to economic losses due to spoilage. His main focus is with the use of filamentous fungi as cell factories for the production of enzymes or therapeutic proteins (both native and encoded by foreign genes) and in the prevention of spoilage by the use of weak acid preservative. His research provides new basic knowledge that is used by companies to help solve problems and improve processes. He undertakes industrial contract research on specific projects of direct commercial importance. Consultancy is offered through Authentigene Ltd on a confidential basis to clients in the biotech and food arenas where filamentous fungi are either exploited or present a problem.
